Coccydynia
Coccydynia is pain in the coccyx or tailbone, and is often worst when sitting. It is often caused by:
- Pelvic floor muscle, and/or buttock muscle over activity
- May be due to several factors, including:
- Vaginal delivery
- Pelvic surgery
- Scar tissue from an old injury
- Sexual abuse
- Muscle imbalance
- Habitual postures that promote “butt gripping”
- May be due to several factors, including:
- An injury to the coccyx, such as a direct fall on the tailbone
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction may cause alignment issues that cause pain at the coccyx
- Hypermobility or hypomobility in the low back and/or SI joint
How Angela Simpson Physiotherapy can help you:
- Educate the client about the cause of the condition
- Teach the client how to not only contract the pelvic floor muscles, but also learn how to relax these muscles
- Teach the client new posture/positions to sit, stand and move in to prevent this pain fromcoming on-possibly an internal pelvic exam, which may include mobilization of the internal tissues
- Car tissue release either externally or internally
