Vestibulodynia is pain that occurs close to or at the opening of the vagina from tension or spasm of the pelvic floor muscles including the muscles that surround the vaginal opening. The exact cause is unknown, but may come from local irritation of the nerves of the pelvic floor muscles due to:

  • Trauma
  • Abuse
  • Surgery
  • Infections

How Angela Simpson Physiotherapy can help you:

  • Treatment for this condition is often a multidisciplinary approach with a doctor, and/or psychotherapist
  • Educate the client about the condition and why it may be occurring
  • Teach the client strategies for how to time the contractions of the pelvic floor muscles appropriately, depending on the task required
  • Provide manual therapy to release tight/ toned muscles either internally or externally
  • Provide positional and postural re-education to help decrease the tone in the muscles surrounding the painful area
  • Provide hands on biofeedback to help the client with the timing of pelvic floor muscle contractions, as there is evidence for this technique helping with this condition
  • Provide exercises for the client to help balance the muscle strength around the pelvis, which may help to prevent the spasms, and/or tension in the pelvic floor
